The short answer
When someone searches “physiotherapist near me” or “cake shop in Indiranagar”, Google shows a map with three businesses, then websites. Getting into that map and onto the first page is local SEO. It is less about tricks and more about being clear, consistent and genuinely useful about where you are and what you do.
This guide covers what actually moves local rankings for Indian businesses — and the shortcuts that can get your listing suspended or your site demoted.
How Google decides who to show
Google describes local ranking in terms of three broad factors:
- Relevance — how well your listing and website match what the person searched for.
- Distance — how far you are from the searcher, or from the place named in the search.
- Prominence — how well known you are: reviews, links, mentions and your overall presence on the web.
You cannot change distance. You can make your relevance obvious and build prominence honestly. Everything below serves one of those two.
Your Google Business Profile comes first
For a shop, clinic, restaurant or office that customers visit, the Google Business Profile matters more than anything else. Fill it in completely:
- The exact business name you use on your signboard — no keywords added to it. “Sharma Physio Clinic” is fine; “Sharma Physio Clinic Best Physiotherapist Pune” breaks Google’s guidelines and can get the listing suspended.
- The right primary category, plus a few accurate secondary ones.
- Address and map pin, placed precisely. Service-area businesses that visit customers can hide their address and list areas served instead.
- Hours, including holidays and festival closures.
- Phone, website and booking or ordering link.
- Real photos of your storefront, interior, team and work. Add new ones regularly.
- Products or services with prices, where it makes sense.
Answer questions on the profile and post updates when something changes — a new menu, a new doctor, festive hours.
Reviews: ask every happy customer, reply to every review
Reviews feed prominence and, more importantly, decide whether people choose you. The honest way to get more of them:
- Ask at the right moment — after a good visit, a delivered order or a finished treatment.
- Make it easy: a short link or QR code at the counter, on the bill, or in the WhatsApp message after delivery.
- Reply to every review, good and bad, politely and specifically.
- Fix the problem behind repeated complaints. That changes future reviews.
Never buy reviews, write them yourself, or offer discounts only in exchange for positive ones. Google removes fake reviews and can restrict or suspend profiles that collect them. It is also simply dishonest to the customers reading them.
One name, one address, one phone number — everywhere
SEO people call it NAP consistency: your Name, Address and Phone should match across your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles, local directories and listings. Mismatches — an old phone number, “Rd” in one place and “Road” with a different shop number in another — make it harder for Google to be sure all of them are you.
- Write your address once, the way the post office would, with landmark and pin code.
- Use the same version on every site you control.
- Update old listings when you move or change your number.
- Put the address and phone in your website footer as text, not just inside an image.
A website that loads on a phone on mobile data
Most local searches in India happen on a phone, often on a mid-range Android handset over mobile data. A slow website loses people before it loads and is a weaker result in Google’s eyes.
- Compress images and serve modern formats. A hero photo should not weigh several megabytes.
- Avoid heavy page builders and unnecessary scripts and chat widgets.
- Put the essentials above the fold: what you do, where you are, a call or WhatsApp button, and a booking or order link.
- Make phone numbers tappable and addresses open in Google Maps.
- Check your pages in Google’s PageSpeed tools and Search Console.

Location pages, done honestly
If you have several branches, give each a page with its own address, hours, phone, map, photos, team and services. That is genuinely useful and helps each branch rank for its area.
If you serve customers in other cities without a branch there, you can still write about how you work with them — but only with content that is truly specific to that place: the local market, the questions customers there ask, the work that is relevant to them.
- Do not publish dozens of pages that are the same text with the city name swapped. Google calls these doorway pages; its spam policies target them, and they can drag down your whole site.
- Do not list addresses where you have no office — virtual offices or a friend’s shop — on your Google Business Profile. Google can suspend listings at addresses where the business does not actually operate.
- Do not stuff keywords like “best”, “top”, “cheap” and a list of areas into titles and footers.
Our own city pages follow this rule: we are a studio in Bengaluru, we say so, and each city page talks about that city’s businesses — see Bengaluru or Surat.
Structured data and the technical basics
Schema markup tells search engines in a machine-readable way what your page is about. For local businesses, the useful types include:
| Schema type | Use it for |
|---|---|
| LocalBusiness (or a specific type like Restaurant, Dentist, MedicalClinic) | Name, address, phone, hours, geo coordinates |
| Service | The services you offer and the area you serve |
| FAQPage | Genuine questions and answers shown on the page |
| BreadcrumbList | How the page sits in your site |
| Product / Menu | Shops and restaurants with prices on the page |
Markup must match what is visible on the page. Then cover the basics: a sitemap submitted in Google Search Console, sensible page titles, one clear H1 per page, internal links between related pages, and HTTPS. Search Console will also show you which searches already bring people to your site.
Write in the language your customers search in
Indian customers search in English, Hindi and other Indian languages, and very often in Hinglish — “cake shop near me open now”, “AC repair wala”, “physio ke liye clinic”. Look at the questions customers ask you on the phone and in WhatsApp; those are the searches to answer.
If many of your customers prefer another language, a properly translated page (not machine-translated and left unchecked) can reach searches your competitors ignore. See regional language apps for how to approach translation. And if you want help with the website side, brief us.
Questions people ask
How long does local SEO take to work in India?
A complete Google Business Profile can start showing in local results within weeks, especially for less competitive searches. Ranking well for competitive searches in a big city usually takes months of steady reviews, an improved website and consistent listings. There are no guaranteed rankings, so be wary of anyone promising them.
Can I rank in a city where I don’t have an office?
For the map results, generally not, because they depend on a real location near the searcher. Your website can still rank for searches about that city if it has genuinely useful, specific content. Do not use a virtual or fake address on Google Business Profile; it can get the listing suspended.
Are city landing pages bad for SEO?
Only when they are copies. Pages that repeat the same text with a different city name are doorway pages under Google’s spam policies and can hurt your whole site. A page with real local information — a branch address, team, local services, or content specific to that city’s customers — is useful and fine.
Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?
You can start with only a profile, but a website helps. It gives Google more to understand your relevance, gives customers a place to book, order or pay, and lets you rank for searches beyond the map. A simple, fast site is enough for most local businesses.
Should I add keywords to my Google Business Profile name?
No. Use the real name on your signboard and documents. Adding words like “best” or a list of services and areas to the business name breaks Google’s guidelines and can lead to the profile being suspended. Put services in categories, the description and your services list instead.
